Val George Anderson, 69, of Hines died on Thursday, May 17, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. A graveside service will be held at the Burns Cemetery, the time and date to be announced.

Anderson was born May 3, 1949, to Merrill V. and Ruth Ella Anderson (Hammons) in Burns. He was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Burns Union High School in 1967.

Anderson enlisted in the Navy on June 4, 1968, and served until March 17, 1972. He completed a tour of duty in Vietnam as a member of the HAL-3 Seawolves. He was stationed at Lemoore Naval Air Station in California, on board the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Yorktown. While on board the Yorktown, his crew was involved in the recovery force of the Apollo Moon Orbital Flight in December 1968.

He married Donna Swearengin on March 11, 1974. They moved to Juneau, Alaska, in 1976. Shannon Anderson was born in 1977, followed by Stacey Anderson in 1980. While in Juneau, he worked for Yukon Office Supply from 1976 to 1982. He worked for Wang Laboratories from 1982 to 1983.

Anderson then returned to Oregon. He lived and worked for a time in John Day. He then went to work for Tecton, Harney County Operations, Inc. and Monaco Coach Corporation in Hines until he was laid off in 2001. He retired and has lived in Hines since then.

He is survived by his daughters Shannon Grei of Medford and Stacey Anderson (Ben) of Portland; sister Phyllis Propeck of Mt. Vernon; and best friend and brother-in-law Jerry Francis of Burns.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Marilyn Francis and Sheri Lemrick.

For those who would like to make a memorial donation, the family suggests the American Legion through Tami’s Pine Valley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, P.O. Box 543, Halfway, OR 97834. Online condolences may be shared at tamispinevalleyfuneralhome.com.

Had not heard about this. Thanks for posting Rod.

Seawolf Val George Anderson, AT3, Gunner, Det 5, 8/9/1971 to 2/22/1972.
Val was not an Association Member.
He had sent me several photos in 2016 and they were added to the Det 5 Photos on our website.
One photo; http://www.seawolf.org/det5/det5_2.jpg is of him by himself....

Val and I made friends in SERE and arrived in country on the same plane. We only saw each other occasionally after. In 1980, I rode motorcycle through Burns OR purposely to find him. The UPS lady knew his name and directed me to a house where she thought he lived. Burns is a small town. Was able to call his mother in John Day. She told me that he was in Alaska. Mostly she wanted to talk about her new grand child. (smiling at that) In 2000 or 2001 I made contact with him through blind phone calls and the Burns Post Master. I finally got a letter from him. He was happy to hear from me but would have preferred not to be found. Didn't want anything to do with the Association. We all have known guys like that. Men that retreat to the comfort of the present. God bless you and keep you Val Anderson.

I was in Chau doc ( Cai dau) Navy base. We called Val Anderson "Andy 3" because we had Andy 1, Andy 2 at that time. I was 1st Lt in VNAF who took training with HAL-3 at that time. Andy 3 was a nice man, good soldier, sorry to hear that he passed away. I am still looking for others Seawolves at det 5.
