Passing of another Seawolf

Gary Ely
Got word last evening that my good friend, fellow Det 9 gunner, and past association president Tony "GUP" Guptaitis has passed due to complications from treatments for a fall he suffered last year. At this time we do not have any info on services but will pass when available. Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate.

May God Bless his family in this time of need. Tony and I had the pleasure of sharing a grand steak while discussing a hot topic of that time period. Gub was and always be a good man in my eyes!!

Warmest Regards,

TK

Many of crazy rides with Gup on Det, showed me how to blow flames with the 50...nice for dark night....Tony worked hard and played hard all of his life...the last couple years weren't fun, watching a good bud go down...but he maintained his sense of humor, and clear annunciation of lots of 4 letter words, till the end...think his last meal was a brat..

Gonna miss his "gentle ways"...

Kelly was with him every minute of every day providing all his care...she is a saint

Gary sorry to hear. Gup was a good guy. Had a few good conversations with him and he was an asset to the association.  Cool dude.  Amazing I am still trucking after major fall in 99. So sorry to hear this. I had no idea. Prayers to all.  This sad journey for so many shipmates and family  is  gaining undesirable steam.

It's not often that a man get to meet a person that will remain a close friend for the rest of his life.  I first met Gup in 1970 on Det 9.  Needless to say that he was one of a kind.  He had a personality that could win over anybody but he also had a tough of self confidence that sometimes was taken as cockiness.  He was one of the real good guys that we need more of.
Gup would always be there when you needed him.  Years ago when I didn't have a computer and I really couldn't afford one, Gup stepped in. He told me that everybody on Det 9 were keeping intouch by email and he was tired of not being able to email me.  He said that he was going to change that.  I really didn't have any idea what he was talking about until I got home from work one day and had a package waiting .  When I opened it, I found an IBM Thinkpad computer. He called a couple of days later and wanted to know what my excuse was now for not emailing.  I told him that I only had one and it was because I didn't know how to use a computer.  He only laughed and said "you southern boys are something else".
Gup was a kind, generous and loving person and I am proud to have had the honor of calling him my friend.
Gup, I love you and I will miss you. RIP you earned it.
