Hello Brother Seawolves,
Today I had the honor to pay a last tribute to Lieutenant Commander Eugene Rosenthal. His family were grateful for the beautiful flowers the Seawolves sent. They were in deed impressive. There were about 70 folks for the church service and about 20 for the burial. Fittingly as we processed through the main gate to the committal shelter, the Blue Angels were performing their first practice air show having arrived home on Monday. Since Gene served in so many naval aviation billets, I feel sure he was proud of their aerial salute.
I wore my new set of blues, purchased for a previousr funeral at Arlington. I was able to make the flag presentation to his widow, Netti, who then asked me to present the flag to Gene's two granddaughters. The young ladies (about 14 & 17) were tearfully appreciative of Netti's kind gesture as were his daughter and sons. After the formal ceremony I took the occasion to make a few remarks about having served with Gene in Det. 3 for less than 12 hours before my "shocking adventure" leading to my departure to USNH Yokosuka. I clearly remembered Gene in action during Tet '68. Det. 4 aboard USS GARRETT COUNTY moved up to Vinh Long for the base security mission and and as a PBR support base. Gene was certainly a man of action with his positive leadership. No wonder he was chosen to lead the largest Seawolf detachment in '67.
Through the years Gene had mentioned very little of his Seawolf experience to his children, so they appreciated the information I was able to share. They did know that he volunteered for duty in HA(L)-3 while in his late forties. You certainly have to respect that attitude.
Best wishes to each of yjou,
Mike Louy
