John Patrick “Jack” Hogan's Daughter is reaching out... Did you know Jack?

Shannon Arballo
Hi there,
Jeff received a call today from Shannon Hogan, the Daughter of Jack Hogan.
She asked us to reach out to the Seawolves on her behalf as she would really like to connect with any Seawolves who may have known her Dad.  She learned so much from the film and now just longs to establish a connection with his Seawolf Brothers and family and learn more about this chapter in his life.
Thank you!!
Shannon

For those who remember Jack, I met him when I was air officer aboard USS JUNEAU, LPD-10.  Jack, Frank "Frito" Vasqez and Bill Knight were the detachment pilots from HC-3 who brought a H-46 aboard for a two ship 6 week midshipman summer cruise June 1971.  The detachment was attached to PHIBRON 7.  They were always getting me in trouble with our skipper, a submariner, who hated aviators.  We stopped in Auckland,NZ, Sidney AS, and dropped them off at Pear Harbor.

Frito and Jack went flying one day while we were close to the Equator.  I lost radio contact with them for a while.  Got a call in pri-fly from flag bridge saying the commodore wanted to land the helo.  I had to "cover" for them while trying to contact them.  They finally showed up and landed.  Jack said they had flown over a small inhabited atoll, hovered over a grass shack while waving and damn near blew the shack away.

Liberty in Auckland and Sidney brought many stories only to be told in person.  These guys probably had the best time of just about any HC-3 detachment EVER.  If anyone runs across Frito, just ask him.

Best wishes to all,

Mike

I never knew Jack, but sure understand how a "Seawolf pilot " would have a great time on a detachment like that ----------- perfect !!    BTW, I was never on her, but I did go through a electrical apprenticeship in Waterloo Iowa ----------- where those of you who are slight history buffs will remember is where the 5 Sullivan Brothers were from , and were among the crew killed when the original Juneau was torpedoed in WW2 ..... Waterloo still remembers the family .       I was in Juneau Alaska when the "Juneau" you were on made her last "Port of call". I have a great picture of her as she steamed down the channel bound for San Diego to be decommissioned ---- proudly displaying her gold anchor which signified she was the oldest in her class still on Duty. I still have the photo file if you are interested

Hello Mike,

Interesting you knew about JUNEAU.  I was the second air department head.  The guy I replaced, Gary Mowery, had left the ship a MONTH before I arrived.  Three days later we steamed out of our home port of Long Beach for the "Middie" cruise.  We steamed in company with another LPD, USS DULUTH LPD-6.  Quite a good deal for all the Mids.  On the way to Auckland were going to cross the Equator at 00 and qualify to become GOLDEN SHELLBACKS".  Unfortunately the Navy got word there might be some Russian electronics monitoring equipment on an atoll  (Bicar Atoll if memory serves me) some 150 miles away from 00.  We would have been able to paint a gold stripe all the way down the JUNEAU's bow had we crossed 00.  Also for those interested, at any subsequent Shellback Ceremonies, Golden Shellbacks rule the ceremony (which have sadly become quite tame with women aboard these days).

Mike I'd be interested in seeing the photos you have of JUNEAU.  Oh, did I mention that while were visiting Juneau with the exceptional 10'+ tides, we actually did "sit on the bottom" at low tide.  Sucked up all kinds of muck into our main fire pumps and throughout much of our fire fighting system.

Best wishes to all,

Mike

Jack and I arrived about the same time at HT-18 in the spring of 1973.  Just in time to make the transfer of HT-18 and 8 to South Field in Milton.  We went thru instructor training together and shared time there as maintenance test pilots after 4 were killed on a night cross country to New Orleans.  We also lived a few houses apart in a development near Elyson Field and made the commute together.

The irony of Jack's death was that he was known as the king of cross country training flights.  He would load up 2 or 3 students and take off for a week and complete their RI syllabus in the process.  Seemedlike his itinerary was always west of P'cola and as a result, he was also known to load up the cargo compartment with Coors (illegal to be sold east of the Mississippi in those days) and was always welcomed back from one of his jaunts by a large thirsty crowd.

A guy's guy to the end.

Mike l. no wonder you guys hit bottom in Juneau ------  10' + would get someone a bad fitness report -------   Juneau gets up to 25' of tide change ------ the outside coast is in the 10' category ------ Skagway gets about 30' on extreme tides     ------ navigation in many areas of SE Alaska says "with local knowledge only' on the charts --- and they mean it ------ I've seen the GPS mapping   at least a third of a mile off in some locations ----- you BETTER be on Radar and have a eye glued to the Fathometer in many areas --- one particular location showed me on the other side of a penninsula on the GPS ------- and I used to go into some of these spots in the dead of night !!          you can go to  viewbug.com    and    search for   michaeldobson      somewhere in my page is the picture of the Juneau coming out of her last port call
