Tom,
You are mistaking those for the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation - Gallantry, same as the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation - Civil Actions and yes, we did all receive those, and there is no Medal, only the Ribbon with Palm and Gold Frame.

The one shown on the Awards page indicating 81 Awards, is the Republic of Vietnam Air Gallantry Cross Award which is an Individual Award and not a "Gedunk Medal". There are a few other Individual Awards also given to Seawolves besides those.

when it's written as "a few other Republic of Vietnam Awards besides the 142 Gallantry Crosses " , the ID gets confused.

That appears to be a different page on the website than the one showing Navy Cross on down....

Tom, for the Navy where we were, the Cross of Gallantry was not a "in country gedunk"   it was a individual award that was attached to a action or series of actions --- kind of like a Navy Com medal I think

not all members of the military liked VN vets....   When I was discharge at Norfolk the personal-man (don't remember what they really call them) typed up my  DD214 and left off all the awards except for national defense ribbon.  I don't have a huge pile of awards like some of you guys were awarded, but I did have air medals, Navy Com, CAR, etc.  He handed it back to me and I asked where is the rest of the awards.  "I don't have time, if you want them on there you need to come back and schedule appointment.  I went a little 'ptsd' on him and a J.G. came out of an office and asked what the problem was.  The yeoman laughed and said I was trying to tell him how to do his job.  The J.G. told me to move on or he would contact my C.O. and pursue a formal complaint "we don't have time to deal with your problems here"

needless to say I was stunned, it wasn't some civilian pissing on my parade by 'real active duty' Navy people...   held a grudge for a long time, but eventually talking with other combat vets I was told that many of the people who never served in country were either jealous or thought we didn't deserve the recognition...    long time ago, and the country was just trying to move on?

Dan, you stated that you didn't receive your third Navy Commendation Medal, well I received two Navy
commendation Medals, third award. one I know for sure does not belong to me.  It was for meritorious service from October 1969 to October 1970, could this be your third award?  I received a third award for heroic achievement on 4 February 1970, but there was no write up nothing.

Nope, not mine! I received my third in 1991, just didn't show up in my search on the DOD site that no longer exists where you could search by SSN. But Congratulations on yours!

I think there was a typo --- wouldn't that be a DD-215 that shows subsequent awarded medals ?

DD250 was on my brain.  I was at Sikorsky for 4years and we signed them when we flight accepted aircraft from the factory.  I meant DD214.

Agree Paul.. same for me discharging from NAS Lakehurst.. records in my folder, half or more belonged to another sailor.. upon questions, they removed papers and said goodbye.

Another Gunner I flew with on many missions, shows only one air medal (DD-214) for his time.

And don't get me started on Mike and David's rescue op that they did not receive recognition for..

An "Honor"  to have worked with Seawolves,  and yes when I arrived on Det,   I was told we ain't here for medals, we have a job to do and that's what we do.. Det 6 CO June/July 1970..
