USS Zumwalt - A Request

Ann Zumwalt
Hello all,

This is Ann Zumwalt's daughter (Admiral Zumwalt's granddaughter) reposting the below, as she does not know how to create a new post!  Her message:

I wondered if this organization might be helpful.  First, I want to introduce myself and very briefly explain why i am writing. My father, Admiral Elmo (Bud) R. Zumwalt, served as Commander of Naval Forces Vietnam 1968-1970 and then became CNO shortly after.  A class of Destroyers has been named after him with the first in class receiving his name. The Commissioning of this futuristic and technologically most advanced Naval destroyer in the world will be commissioned this Oct 15th, 2016.  All funding must be privately donated for this event.  The ZUMWALT Commissioning Committee is looking to raise money.  To be truthful I have never done this kind of task, asking for dollars, and am just starting to enter this formidable world.  Perhaps can a list of names be acquired with emails or the like to see if donations of any amount would be welcomed.  We have produced a brochure that we can send.

I would greatly appreciate anyone helping.  My father so loved his fellow veterans.  I would write more but I am a very slow typist!!!

ADM Z's grandson worked for Cong Miller's personal office and has just left to run for the seat in the first Cong district in FL (includes P'cola and Eglin).

I have sent the post from his "aunt" for verification and will post when I hear from him.

Regarding the commissioning ceremony for the USS Zumwalt, I got the following reply from his grandson James:

Hey Mike. No not a scam. They changed the rules a few years ago after sequestration that the navy won't pay for pomp and circumstance including commissioning ceremonies. They have to raise about $2.5m.

I got the following from Z's grandson regarding the cost of the commissioning ceremony:

Thousands of people, food, events, etc, and we're basically renting out Baltimore harbor.

I asked him where to send donations and will post when he replies just in case anyone is interested.

Hi Howard this Ann Zumwalt, Admiral Z, " favorite daughter"  This is legitimate... I am not great at the computer--- had to have my daughter Camille  rewrite my request properly.  How do I get in touch with you all... without making my cell # available to the whole world???

Hi Mike,

I just wrote to Howard, I really am Ann Zumwalt my father's "Favorite Daughter".  This request for raising $ is legitimate.  How do I get in touch with you all without lending my cell# out to the whole world?  I am very new to the computer world so much so that I had my daughter Camille rewrite this request properly earlier because I initially did it wrong.

Ann - your nephew James has my contact info.

If you are seeking to have HAL-3 members contribute, I suggest you post the information about how to do it on this website.  It would be up to the association leaders to do anything on behalf of the membership.

Ann... sorry I didn't get right back to you.  I see that you have some information to work with to get the word out to the Association.  I'll be looking for the post with the info... I had the honor of sitting next to him at one of our reunions in Pensacola... He was a great man and very well respected.

Howard... So wonderful to hear, and i'm so appreciative of you getting back to me.  Please look at this website below.  We're having some difficulties with it, but hopefully you'll be able to get some information, and you may also reach out to our treasurer, whose email is listed on the site.  Please let me know if you're having any trouble.  The Navy has delayed the commissioning date and location until recently, which has put pressure on our fundraising efforts (which must be done entirely privately, as by law the Navy cannot fund any portion of the Commissioning).  Thank you very much!

Adm. Zumwalt came down from Saigon to Nha Be and wanted every Seawolf not in the air to be there. We figured, Aw crap. He is either going to announce the decommissioning of the squadron or send us all to Cambodia. Nope, he have a great speech and awarded us all the PUC.
