Gents, passing on the below Sad News concerning a fellow Seawolf:
EDWARD HAMILTON DOOLIN III ‘68 [LTJG, Dets 1 & 2, 1/9/1970 to 12/15/1970]
“Ted” died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Pensacola, Florida on November 7th surrounded by family after a six year battle with “agent orange” cancer.
As the son of a Navy fighter pilot (Ted Doolin, Jr ’45) he was born at NAS Pensacola on October 3, 1946 and grew up traveling up and down the east coast between Maryland, Virginia and Florida.
His dream was always to become the fourth generation family member to attend the Naval Academy after his great great grandfather, both grandfathers and father.
After graduation from Norfolk Academy in 1964, his dream came true with a congressional appointment to USNA.
Upon graduation “Dools” (a nickname/call sign bestowed on him by his company classmates and carried throughout his remaining life) quickly went through flight training in Pensacola, Florida.
After receiving his wings in September 1969, he joined the HAL 3 “Seawolves” to conduct combat operations in support of the Navy “Seals” in the Mekong Delta of the Republic of Vietnam.
This was followed by tours at HC-3 San Diego; the NSA at Fort Meade, Maryland; Barking Sands, Hawaii; HC-18, Whiting Field, Florida; VC-1 Barbers Point, Hawaii; and finally on the staff of CINCPAC, Hawaii.
After retirement in 1989, “Dools” returned to Pensacola, Florida where he spent the rest of his life combating substance abuse. As everyone who knew him can attest, he put his heart and soul into helping others.
There was no more loyal and devoted friend. His final desire was to live long enough for his nephew’s, Richard ’99, change of command which happened five days before his death.
He is survived by his brothers, Mike ’70 and Jim ’74, and his sister Tory as well as six nieces and nephews. He will be laid to rest at the USNA Columbarium at 11 a.m., 14 June 2019.
