I'm Sorry Timothy,
I never met your Dad and don't have much for you other than your Dad was one of the "Original" Plank Owner Seawolves.

He was a Gunner with HC-1 Det 29, the first HC-1 Det to arrive in Vietnam, attached to RIVER PATROL FORCE, HC-1 Det Vung Tau (a pre-"Commissioning" unit set up to start HA(L)-3 in Vietnam)
where he served from 7/1/1966 to 2/17/1967.

He trained with Army gunship units until end of SEP 1966. In AUG 1966 they began operating from the USS Tortuga (LSD 26). On AUG 30, 1966 they relieved the Army gunships on the Tortuga.
10 days later Tortuga was relieved by the USS Comstock (LSD 19) and NOV 27, 1966 operated from the USS Jennings County (LST-846).

He was then transferred (on paper) to HA(L)-3 and basically served on the same HC-1 Det 29 that became HA(L)-3 Det 1 on 1 April 1967 when HA(L)-3 formally "established".

He departed HA(L)-3 on 6/2/1967, and probably left Saigon, Vietnam for the states approximately 3 days after that, transferring to HATRON 123 at Whidbey Island, WA.

Hopefully some of the other HC-1 Det 29 men can give you more.
I believe your Dad is on the right in the photo you posted...was there a name on the photo for the other guy?

Yes dad is the one on the right. Unfortunately i don't have much more information, it's all a big puzzle and other men who either served with dad or know of his past are piecing it together for me as they find out or give more information...
