Looking for Buddy Statements for Purple Heart

Richard Maxwell
My name is Richard Maxwell.  I work for Congressman French Hill's office in Arkansas' 2nd Congressional District.  We have a constituent named Carroll Wayne Campbell who served in Attack Light Squadron 3, Detachment 6 at Dong Tam, RVN, from December 1967-January 1969.  Wayne is also the commander of the same VFW post that I am a member of.  He told me a story about how in 1968 he was flying as a door gunner, supporting a Navy Seal mission.  His helicopter came under small arms fire and one of the 7.51 rockets on his side was hit.  He said it caught fire and was able to be fired before it exploded but it exploded shortly after being fired.  The explosion blew a hole in the pilot door and he received shrapnel wounds to his upper left arm, forearm, and knee.
He says that after they landed an Army medic checked him out and he was sent to the Army hospital at Dong Tam.  He was then released to his Det. Senior Petty Officer and put on a non-fly status until the wounds had time to heal.

If any of you served with or remember Wayne, and remember this incident please contact me.  I am looking for any statements from the Seawolves that he served with that would verify this incident.  Please call, fax, write, or email me with any information that would help Wayne to receive his long overdue Purple Heart.  My contact information is below.

Thank you,

Richard Maxwell
