John Olof Salonen, 75, of Salisbury passed away on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Nassau County, NY., to the late Evi Turpienen and the late John Hugo Salonen. John honorably served our country and made his career in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander with twenty years of service. He was a member of Salisbury Elks Lodge # 699. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Statesville and former member of Haven Lutheran Church in Salisbury. Left to cherish his memories are his daughters: Tara Salonen of Acton, Maine, Cynthia Salonen of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Victoria Salonen of Rockledge, Fla.; sister, Jane Henderson (Skip) of Asheville; two grandchildren: Meagan Morris, Joshua Rouleau; and nieces, Julie Wagner, April Delac; and nephew, Bancroft Henderson. Service: 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Robert Dovenmuehle officiating. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is located at 465 Hartness Road, Statesville, NC 28677. Burial: 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Old Historic Salisbury National Cemetery, 202 Government Road, Salisbury, NC 28144. Military rites will be accorded by Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard.
