Helen "Patches" Musgrove Gift of a Beret

Dennis Kim
I am not a Seawolf but served two tours as an advisor with the Vietnamese Rangers. I am also a historian/collector and am seeking information on who may have given his beret to Helen "Patches" Musgrove when she visited the unit sometime around 1967. In her book, there are some names on who she met at an awards ceremony for an Aviator named Goff, who was awarded a Silver Star from Captain Ralph Niesz. Three names were mentioned Tim Hayes, Larry P. Taylor, and James T. Evens, all from Florida her home state.  I also have a patch for the Army Aviation unit who trained the Navy aviators you may want to add as part of your history. I love history and am an administrator of three pages. One on the Vietnam War is as follows: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1726441960963865/

I remember when Patches visited us in Nha Be, but I don't remember about the beret. Tim Hayes was one of my pilots, Larry Taylor (DAT) was lead ship crew chief and .50 cal gunner. I was either left 60 gunner on lead ship or had made crew chief/twin .30 gunner on wing ship. At the time Patches visited she was ill and mixed up some facts according to Larry. My name is Evans, not Evens, a common mistake. I don't do Facebook.  AL Billingsly might have more info.

Sir thank you for your reply.

From what I have found,  this beret was given to her by a piolet that flew her out to a ship.

Here is a picture of her beret that I was not able to add to the thread. If you can add it as a reply it would be appreciated.

I am also sending you a picture of the Army Aviators patch that should be added to the organization's history.  I have other information that I can also share.

Looking forward to finding the answer to who the piolet may have been.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Mahalo and Aloha,
Dennis

Dennis, thanks for all the information you've passed on.

One minor correction re: the pilot's name mentioned above by Seawolf JT Evans. The pilot's name was Al Billings "Seawolf 28".

The Army patch you showed in your link is in our Squadron history and from the original Army 145th Aviation Battalion, Task Force "Operation Sea Wolf" with crews originally on the USS Tortuga and USS Belle Grove until the HC-1 Dets 29, 27, 25 & 21 Navy Crews came in country, trained with them and took over operations becoming the first 4 Detachments of HA(L)-3. I received a photo of this same patch from Army CPT Joffre Filion of the original Army Seawolves.

Thank you for your response and information and glad that a picture of the Army patch is in your archives. Not sure but these are two other items relating to the Army's Seawolf Insignia.  A Beercan DI and a Sea Wolf tab.

Al Billings, would you have any information on the beret?

Mahalo,
Dennis
