an "alternative lifestyle" guy went Mt. Hood to commit suicide , chickened out and couldn't get
back down due to melting snow ...available NG Blackhawks couldn't make it to the 11,000 feet
altitude needed. Looks like CH-47 had no problems. Pilot holds it completely steady up there in
the crosswinds backed up to the mountain.

Hovering there with only the ramp touching .... you watch
the vid and it looks like a still photo for quite a while.

Oregon AF reserve lost a Pavehawk there  years earlier,
trying to do the same thing.

I recall watching that "charlie foxtrot".  How quickly the flight went wrong doing what they do.

And, that the bird was rebuilt afterwards.. then later,  shot-down in Afghanistan on a medical mission..
killing 4 Americans..  Sad deal.

I've been a pax in Ch-47's (but never a CH-46) a couple of times ... very, very strong rotor wash.

flew from NSA Da Nang to the USN station at Phu Bai (near Hue) , you know that you are in the presence
of something very powerful when near them.

Here's a few photos of a mission I was on up at Whidbey SAR April, 1975 when we landed on Mt. Baker and dropped off a group of scientists and all their gear.
Went into an immediate white out, at or just above 10,000 ft, hard to breath lugging all the gear out, breaking through the snow, and clear of the rotors.

I was stationed at Whidbey SAR twice, '74-'77 with UH-1N's and H-46's, then again after a tour with Guam SAR, '80-'84 with UH-1N's,
and back to Whidbey '80-'84 with the H-46's then transitioned to H-3's after we lost an H-46 and crew in the Mountains one night on 9/11/80. Then back to H-46's with HC-11, Det 6.

Coming off LST to shore, Gulf of Siam, believe I was onboard Chinook CH-46.. lots diff then lift-off in UH1-B Huey...   "power verses pucker"...
