On August 11, 1971 Det 7 was called to help Det. 1. One of their helicopters crashed in the South China Sea along the cost of Vietnam . The crew were rescue by the other helicopter and taken some ware in land. We were getting low on fuel so were told to head out to Det. 1's base to land on a ship to refuel and have lunch. I had never flew over the ocean before and as the land disappear behind us I was nerves and when the water changed from brown to blue I knew were a long way from land.I have been trying to find out what was the name of the ship we landed on. I have look at the web pages for the ships listen on the Seawolfs web page but none of them were in the South China Sea at this time. The only ship I have found that was in the right location is the USS Vernon County LST-1161. Does anyone remember this ship?
