Raleigh Smith passed away this past Friday. This is the note I got from Lee, his wife:
"Raleigh's illness with cancer was blessedly short with little pain. He died about 9 p.m. on October 31st.
A chapel service with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Saturday Nov 8th at Holomon-Brown, Independence Blvd. location in Virginia Beach."
Prior to that, I received the following from her:
"Raleigh has not had a good past months. Starting late August, a simple operation on his neck spine (to relieve pinched nerves) resulted in an unrelated partially paralyzed upper arm, clots to his lungs, and out of control heart beat. His progressive weakness, lack of appetite and various pains led to more testing. Last week we were told that X-rays show that he has a very aggressive cancer (stage IV Sarcoma). It is not treatable and he is being admitted to hospice.
He is at home and is quite comfortable but very weak and unable to read his mail and converses poorly. Hearing is good!
Brad and Cory are helping a lot and Cory is using all his hard-earned knowledge from his bad accident last fall to help him move around and good tips for his comfort.
With the holidays coming up, I wanted you to know now. I'll keep you up to date.
Each one of you have enriched his life and for this he is grateful for your friendship. Please send your prayers for an easy passing and God's love.
Lee
