CDR James Robert Walker, Seawolf, USN

Received this email this morning from Seawolf Mike Louy in Pensacola, Fl:

Hello Seawolves,

Yes I know, some of you aren't in the Pensacola area but you are “in the loop” of what is coming up.

As many of you know, Jimmy Walker died on 6 February.  His funeral ceremony was held in Kimberling City, MO.  I spoke at length with his wife, Barbara, this evening to see what the plans were for his burial at Barrancas National Cemetery, at NAS Pensacola. No date was given in the obituary.  She said that the burial will be in June.  His grandson James Wesley Walker is serving in the USAF and is presently in the “sandbox” and he isn’t sure when he can make it home.  Jim wanted him there.

We have enough time to get things planned.  As many of you may know I was a CACO in my last two commands.  I’ve helped bury a number of buddies at Barrancas and want to see this a special one.  Barbara mentioned that her sister is a professional video producer who made a video of Jim’s funeral ceremony including the extensive bike escort.  A DVD will be made of the ceremony and Barbara was hoping to be able to show it for those who attend his burial.  I’m sure that can be done.

She hopes to have a bagpiper and a real bugler for the honors ceremony.  That too can be done.   I know we have a number of folks to draw from here in town, so if any of you personally know a piper or bugler, please let me know. Since Jim will be buried pretty close to the centerline of the east/west runway at Sherman, I’m thinking it will be somewhat easier to have a HT “NAVY CROSS formation training flight” from Whiting make an appearance.  It was a real pain in the ass for Jack Bolton’s funeral years back to have the official request approved through CNATRA only to have CNET disapprove it for some reason.  However the HT-18 Marine ops officer wouldn’t take no for an answer, so he just scheduled a training formation flight.  Anyone want to take bets that Captain Catone can’t get it done?  Sorry Dick, I just had to blurt it out.  Hey, if Bud Day got a missing man formation of four F-4's, a NAVY CROSS recipient should have at least [two] helos fly over.

Well, this is enough for now.  I welcome any comments, ideas, solutions for the burial of our dear friend, James Walker.

Best to all,

Mike

FYI Mike,
We have a Plank Owner Seawolf gunner who is a "snowbird" from Canada coming down to Murieta, CA when it gets cold, who is a 'bagpiper'. He's even played for Queen Elizabeth II.
Might be a stretch for him to travel across to the other side, but I will try to contact him later this morning when California wakes up, and get back to you.

Got in contact tonight with Plankowner Seawolf Gary Watkins, Gunner Det 2, '68-'69 and he would love to do the bagpipes at Jim's service. He's done military services before also.

He just needs to work out travel before he can commit, and will be in touch with Mike Louy.

Plank Owner Seawolf playin' the 'pipes for Plank Owner Seawolf's Service...that's going to be some service! Sounds like it will be an honorable event for the family and all attending....
