I was unaware that the USS New Orleans was in Vietnam. I served in HM-12 in North Vietnam on that 'boat'. About a month ago I was having coffee at the VA and started a conversation with a guy who was on the New Orleans during the retreat from Phnom Penh ... I think it was called operation "Eagle Lift", I believe it was involved in Operation Frequent Wind also...
no doubt there are some damn good stories from her sailors...in the end I think she was used for target practice...and sunk
I may have missed them somewhere, but they sure didn't seem to list our LST's ----- I was on the Windom, Westchester, Washoe, and Tom Green County ------- I wasn't on the Garrett, but didn't see it or any other "T" on the roster
If you do a "Ctrl-F" (for find), and type LST, you will only come up with two:
USS Clark County (LST-601) and USS Mahnomen County (LST-912), and both were rescued/salvaged after being beached ashore!
Click "Ship not on the list and you think it should be?" at the top...
"A Veteran must file an Agent-Orange related disability claim before VA will conduct research on a specific ship not on VA's ships list. This requirement also applies to survivors and children with birth defects. VA does not have the capacity to research ships when no compensation claim is filed."
